Last September, I attacked the misogynistic views of the religious opponents of the HPV vaccine and their belief that the injection would turn teenage girls into ‘sexually incontinent tarts’ who are ‘lacking in self-respect and basic morality’. Now Christian Voice I’ll say it again, I’m a Christian, but they are not my voice) are back for a second bite at Eve’s Apple.
This time it’s a full page ‘advertorial’ in New Statesman, which places the blame for the breakdown of society and the rise in violent crime firmly at the feet of women. According to CV and it’s spokesman Stephen Green, the factors causing societal failure are: the Divorce Reform Act and Matrimonial Breakdown Act, the Abortion Act (of course), women entering the employment market and the HPV vaccine. Now you may notice the common denominator in all this – they all have given freedoms to women. Methinks your misogyny shines through once again, Mr Green.
Quoted in today’s Daily Mail, Mr Green elaborates on his theory regarding the HPV vaccine. He said:
‘It is simple common sense to realise that with the HPV vaccine, girls will think they are covered against everything, especially if they are on the pill as well, so promiscuity will rise and there will be even more gonorrhoea and chlamydia cases and even more infertility.’
Common sense? Whose common sense, Mr Green? Last year you accused our teenagers, including my 12 year old daughter, of being tarts, who would see their vaccination as the green light for sexual promiscuity. Now you repeat that accusation, with the added insult that our daughters are so stupid and to see the HPV injections as the starting gun for their sex lives to begin and so weak that they have given up control over their own destinies.
The added sting in the tail is that, according to Mr Green, the vaccine will cause infertility. It is this point that has caused the Advertising Standards Authority to force the withdrawal of the advert from future publication. It says that the advert ‘breached codes on truthfulness, substantiation and principles‘.
In a couple of months time, my daughter will receive her third and final injection in the HPV series. So far I haven’t noticed a transformation into a man-eating slut. Yes, she has started wearing shorter skirts, but only with opaque tights underneath at her own insistence! She has shown little interest in boys; her pin-up is Green Day’s Billy Joe Armstrong, for his ability with a plectrum, rather than the appearance of his pecs.
Grow up, Mr Green and your friends. Stop giving Christians a bad name and start treating the young women of this country with the respect that they deserve.

Where is this breakdown in society? Seriously – how can anyone who was around in the 1980s and lived through the Brixton riots, Toxteth riots, Miners’ Strike and the inexorable climb in crime rates (that peaked in 1995) seriously claim that society is more broken down now than then?

Having not seen the paper, by Advertorial do you mean a paid advert or a real article.
If it’s an advert is it worth complaining to the ASA?
Be nice to see CV have to respond to a real complaint, instead of them making their stupid ones.

Quite right. I’m also a Christian, although I would cheerfully set my beliefs aside to herd these kind of nutters off a cliff.
Perhaps the most interesting comment concerns these voracious teenage sluts (I never met any of them in my teens, more’s the pity…). The real discussion might need to be over whether it is anyone’s business what teenage girls do.
If they want to have sex – and some of course will – who’s to say they shouldn’t, as long as reasonable advice and information is given to ensure they aren’t idiots about it. But then the same can be said of teenage boys. Or middle aged bigoted supposed Christians for that matter.
Good post – and good luck with your teenage daughter. My three year old daughter is already giving me grey hairs!

Ryan, you wil see that the AA has already taken action: “It is this point that has caused the Advertising Standards Authority to force the withdrawal of the advert from future publication. It says that the advert ‘breached codes on truthfulness, substantiation and principles‘.”
