So MPs have voted to retain their second homes allowance, including the now infamour ‘John Lewis list’. They also voted to block plans to have their expenses externally audited.
No surprise that Claire Ward voted to retain all the allowances. After all, it’s a long journey from Watford to Westminster. Several thousand of her constitunts do a similar on even longer commute every working day of the year. MPs of course have around 20 weeks a year recess in their constituencies and don’t stay in Westminster for five days in most weeks. No surprise either that Ms Ward has decided to defend this largess.
It was left to LibDem MP Nick Harvey to make the same point that so many constiuents of Ms Ward would like to. He said, “It was a total own-goal on the part of the House of Commons. An opportunity to put our house in order and be seen to put our house in order has been passed up.
“They took all the nice bits of the package but not the ones they didn’t like. They took the spoonful of sugar but refused the medicine“.
