The Daily Mail – where misogyny sells

Over at LibDem Voice today, Alex Foster’s post on some of the scarier articles from yesterday’s Daily Mail sent me to today’s web edition of the paper. Following on from my post yesterday on Leo McKinstry’s bid for Jan Moir’s crown of hate, I thought that the headlines couldn’t be any more frightening today. Boy, was I wrong!

For a newspaper that has a higher percentage of female readers than any other daily national, the Mail does have a surprisingly high regard for a dose of misogyny. With a good store that has not been used over the Christmas period, it places a huge helping in its shop window with a report on Charlie Sheen’s alleged assault and threats to kill his current wife, Brooke Mueller.

THE VENGEFUL WIVES WHO WANT TO WIPE THE FLOOR WITH MR SHEEN

says the headline, managing to both accuse and patronise with one phrase. I wonder how long if took them to come up with that headline? The basis of the story is that the current wife is talking to one of the ex-wives and that this ‘unholy alliance’ should worry Charlie Sheen. Read on and you realise how little evidence the Mail needs to concoct a story of scheming women working together to deprive a man of his money, his property, his livelihood, his freedom even.

I don’t know whether Sheen held a knife to his wife’s throat, but the police were worried enough about his behaviour to keep him in custody for 24 hours over Christmas. However on a day when the main story is of a mother and child shot in the head by their husband/father, it seems more than a little flippant to turn around a serious allegation of knife crime to blame it on the woman and make a cheap pun about cleaning.
