The most delayed Arsenal departure of 2008 has finally happened. Adebayor has finally left the Emirates for the El Dorado of Eastlands. So I care? Nope! I’m not just saying that to hide my disappointment. When Liam Brady left Highbury for Juventus in 1980, my teenage heart sobbed for weeks, something that was repeated over the years, most of all when Titi left us for the Nou Camp.
But Adebayor has never been in the same class, for skill, for effort or for the affection generated amongst Gooners. I remember sitting at the Emitrates in October 2006 with a Watford supporting friend, as the Gunners won 3-0. As my friend uttered, the Hornets were lucky to get nil. And although Ade made one goal for Henry and scored the third himself, he didn’t seem to care. I remember telling Chris that the fans didn’t really care for Adebayor and I didn’t rate him. Over the next couple of seasons he produced the occasional flash of brilliance, but after his toying with a transfer last summer, any vestigial relationship with the fans was lost – and we all knew it.
As Julian puts it so well at Gingers for Limpar, there was never any love, just a one night stand that continued, fuelled by lust. On the day of that Watford game, Theo Walcott made his first start. Maybe then we needed Adebayor’s size and strength to complement the Puckish skills of van Persie and the mercurial talents of Walcott, but no more. That’s the best £25 million the Gunners will ever make.
