Politicians, don't hide your light under a bushel!

After the result of last night’s 14-5 victory on tuition fees at the party’s Federal Policy Committee, I was hoping to be told who voted which way. No chance! Apparently there is a convention not to reveal which way other people voted – why I’m not sure.

I know who about half the Righteous 14 are, because they have outed themselves privately or publicly. I’m pretty sure who three of the five are, but I would like to know the lot. Over half of the committee is voted for by ordinary members like me and I line to have an idea what they may be voting for before I decide who I might be voting for.

So my challenge to FPC members is ‘Don’t hide away; be proud of your decision and let us all know’. You ARE proud of it, aren’t you?

I emailed all the candidates for Fpc asking their view on fees before voting in the federal elections for precisely this reason to know what I was voting for

Sometimes I despair at the secrecy in this party. It does go against our nature. We would hate this kind of lack of accountability in public life, so why on earth do we put up with it in our own bodies.

I think it’s important to compile a list of who it is known voted which way. I don’t think any personal confidences should be broken but any info you can give would be very helpful.

My manifesto for election to FPC included my position of free tuition fees. I am very happy to say I was one of the 14 who voted to remove fees from the paper going to conference.
