So now everyone has had their two penn’orth (or £10) on Jackie Smith’s husband’s viewing habits and her ability to check expenses returns. But there is a certain amount of misogyny and sexism creeping in to discussions on the subject.
Sure Ms Smith is responsible for what is claimed against her name. But how many MPs are guilty of the stupidity of signing what they are given by their staff without checking every piece of paper? The entire system is broken and in urgent need of fixing. More worrying to me are those people who think the Home Secretary should resign or be embarrassed because her husband watches porn occasionally. Firstly, whatever my personal views, what Richard Timney watched was perfectly legal. But more importantly, what he does is not her responsibility, nor is it a reflection on her, even if she knew about it.
The fact that women are independent beings and not their husband’s chattels seems to have been lost on many commentators and in particular one caller to Nicky Campbell’s show this morning, who insisted that the Home Secretary’s name was not ‘Ms Smith’ but ‘Mrs Timney’. What century are we living in? Arghh!
