As well as the appalling racist cartoon, the Daily Mail has also used their more usual tactic of a screaming, outraged headline to grab readers’ attention today.
Labour’s legacy: Marriage rates plummet to the lowest level since 1862
As Gordon Brown’s Labour government faced mounting claims it has failed to support the institution, it emerged that religious marriages accounted for just a third of all ceremonies in 2008.
So, quite clear there – one way or another, the Labour government has caused a huge fall in the rate of marriage. Or has it? According to the Office of National Statistics, marriages during the first eleven years of a Labour government fell by 39,546 or 14.5%. However for the last eleven years of the previous Conservative government, under both Thatcher and Major, the number of marriages dropped by 75,388 or 21.7% - half as much again as the rate under Labour.
So which colour of government is best for marriage? Maybe the Daily Mail should keep its mouth shut?
