It’s too late now, Tony

So warmonger former Prime Minister Tony Blair has cancelled his London book signing. He said:

“I don’t want the public to be inconvenienced by the inevitable hassle caused by protesters.”

On a cold February day seven years ago, I joined over a million people marching through London to protest against the possible invasion of Iraq. Blair took no notice. At the time, Andy Todd, assistant deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said the crowd had been tolerant and patient and “the biggest I have experienced.”

It’s a pity Blair didn’t take more notice of protesters then. Just think of the ‘inevitable hassle’ he could have saved for our wonderful armed forces and the civilian population of Iraq. But then his book and his speaking engagements wouldn’t have been quite as lucrative.

It was always going to be a bad and dangerous business with all the prospects of going badly wrong. Even a slight acquaintance with history should have told Blair that. In the early 1950′s it was high on the list of places you wanted to avoid being posted to.
