So after signing his party up to a ragtag bunch of right-wing political parties in the European Parliament, with comrades that include Latvians who celebrate the Waffen SS and Poles who seek to oppose the ‘Germanisation’ of Europe, David Cameron might be believed to have a strange view of Europe and Germany’s distant Nazi past. And so it proved at a Cameron Direct Q&A session yesterday – otherwise known as an election rally for the upcoming Norwich North parliamentary by-election, the Conservative leader adopted a German accent during a debate on ID cards.
‘Vere are your papers?‘, he asked of the assembled audience. But many did not see the joke. A woman raised her hand and asked, ‘I wonder about the wisdom of you adopting a German accent?‘
So was Cameron trying to appease his new Latvian friends or demonstrate solidarity (excuse the pun) with the Poles? Or was ir just a poor attempt at humour for the man who is becoming increasingly Blairite in his attempts to please people? Either way, it will not have endeared him to Angela Merkel, an otherwise likely ally of Cameron’s in Europe (before he marched his MEPs out of the EPP, that is).
So next time politicians ask football fans not to sing ‘One World Cup and two World Wars’ so as not to harm our relationships with European colleagues, maybe we should ask them why they think that they can get away with it.

It’s worth a link to the Mail’s lookalike pic of him and Basil Fawlty.

Strangely, Dave’s rally was in Norwich South, unlike Nick’s tomorrow, which is in Norwich North, at Hellesdon High School.
