In 2007-08, Watford’s Labour MP claimed the maximum £23,083 for her second home, despite living well under an hour’s journey from Westminster, a commute carried out by many local residents every day. This amount is paid free of tax and National Insurance, meaning that it is equal to a gross salary of £39,124.
According to the Office of National Statistics, the median annual earnings in the Watford constituency in 2008 was £24,902. Only the top 15% of Watford’s workers earn more for working an entire year than Ms Ward took JUST FOR HER SECOND HOME, without taking into account her £63,000 salary and all the other expenses which she receives from the public purse. If you add in all those who are not earning an income because they are retired, bringing up families, disabled or unemployed and the percentage of residents earning this amount shrinks even further.
Think about all the teachers, nurses, secretaries, shop workers, engineers etc who work hard yet earn far less than £40,000 a year. Do you think Watford’s MP deserves so much more than their salaries, just to spare her getting on the train home like the rest of us?
