So Michael Vaughan has stepped down as England’s cricket captain. He has chosen to do so before he became an embarrassment and dragged the entire team down with him. He has done so with grace and humility and drawn comments of respect and affection from colleagues, opponents and the general public alike.

The same can’t be said for Gordon Brown. Shame.
