My 12 year old daughter isn’t interested in boys yet, thank goodness. But I know that one day she will have her heart broken. A smooth operator will promise her undying love and attention and she’ll fall for it. She’ll believe the best of him at first, then slowly come to realise that he is not what she hoped and thought. Most of us have nursed a broken heart and come through it stronger, with little damage to anything except our own pride.
There’s a new charmer out there now, who’s certainly not looking for a one to one relationship – UKIP. Behind those smiles, there’s a sinister outlook. My daughter saw Nigel Farage and his inane grin on the television last week and said ‘Who is THAT? He looks like someone you shouldn’t take sweets from ‘. Maybe she’s not such a bad judge of character!
Examination of the record of those elected as UKIP MEPs does not stand up to any scrutiny. Ashley Mote was jailed for £65,000 of benefit fraud, whilst the UKIP MEP who allegedly represents me, Tom Wise, has been charged with false accounting, following an investigation by the EU and Bedfordshire Police. Issues first came to light with Mr Wise in 2005, but it took until 2007 for UKIP to expel him from the party.
UKIP’s one Westminster representative in the shape of Bob Spink, voted against the reform of MPs expenses less than 12 months ago and yesterday was one of those who praised the Speaker from the green benches.
Even Dr Alan Sked, who founded UKIP in 1993, believes that UKIP are unworthy of votes, protest or otherwise, saying in a letter to the Telegraph this week:
Before anyone takes up the advice that Lord Tebbit has given on radio, not to vote in the European elections for the three main parties, perhaps we should be shown the expenses claimed by MEPs of the minor parties represented at Brussels.
Two people elected as UKIP MEPs last time have been indicted for fraud. Why should a vote for their party serve better than a vote for the major parties?
So there you have it – straight from the horse’s mouth. A vote for UKIP is a vote for corruption, not a harmless protest against it. But unlike a simple teenage heartbreak, the damage could be both more severe and longer-lasting.

She might be. But she’s still uninterested in relationships and she’ll stil get her heart broken.

The Daily Politics show today had a wonderful UKIP MEP on. Apparently, his expenses are all above board. He doesn’t do this internet thingie, but we’re all welcome to drop round to his office and have a leaf through his filing cabinet.
Funny thing is, he didn’t seem too keen to talk about the expenses of any of his current or former colleagues. Can’t imagine why.
