Do Labour think repossession is ‘a price worth paying’?

I was working at my computer this morning and, as is often the case, had Radio 5Live on in the background. Victoria Derbyshire was interviewing Housing Minister John Healey and was discussing the new repossession figures announced today. I couldn’t believe it when I heard Healey say:

“For some people home repossession can be the best option.”

Obviously Victoria Derbyshire couldn’t believe him either, as she challenged him twice to confirm what he’d said – and he did.

I tweeted my thoughts almost immediately.

I cannot believe that the best response of a housing minister in  a Labour government to record repossession figures is to say that is can be the best option. It has echoes of Norman Lamont telling us in the early 1990s that unemployment is ‘a price worth paying’.

    Two points…

Don’t be so ridiculous – Tory CCHQ gave O’Grady feeder lines on this story, and her follow up today.

Plus your fellow LibDem councillor, Richard Baum – also a PPC – take a rather different, less hysterical view than Shapps, Teather and yourself – http://richardbaum.mycouncillor.org.uk/2010/02/11/if-healey-gets-shouted-down-for-repossession-remark-why-should-any-politician-ever-say-anything/
